Avec ses 44, 5 millions de visiteurs uniques en Juin 2009, le co-fondateur de Twitter a annoncé que la publicité fera son apparition sur le réseau social en 2010. Cela s'exécutera par une modification de ses conditions générales d'utilisation et ainsi permettre à la plateforme de se reposer sur un modèle économique plus pérenne.
